After School Classes – Winter 2019 Sherman Oaks

ALL KIDS need opportunities to have fun, connect with others, learn new skills, make friends, and enjoy a sense of belonging… That’s what Kids Like Me is all about!

The Help Group Kids Like Me programs are created especially for children and adolescents with AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER and OTHER SOCIAL/LEARNING CHALLENGES. All programs are designed and overseen by highly trained professionals.

MONDAYS (starting January 14th)                                                                           

Therapeutic Riding                                                                                                                         

Kids Like Me and Special Spirit Inc. provide a special opportunity! Students are transported to Moonshadow Ranch in Shadow Hills where they learn about horses, safe handling techniques, grooming, care and feeding, bathe, and more. Basic Riding skills in walk and trot are taught, with an emphasis on controlling a horse in a safe and trusting manner. Benefits of therapeutic riding include boosting focus, balance, independence, communication, and social skills.                         

Ages: 10 and up    Cost: $440 for 8 sessions  (Vans leave Autism Center at 3:30pm and return at 5:45pm)                                          

Film Making                                                                                                                           

This dynamic class gives participants an opportunity to work collaboratively with peers in the specialty area of video and film making.  Students learn to write, direct, act, and film a variety of videos, such as commercials, short films or music videos.            

Ages: 5-9 & 10 and up    Cost: $225 for 8 sessions         

Social Skills Groups                                                                                                                             

Utilizing evidence-based practices, Help Group therapists promote skill development in peer communication and interaction while fostering more meaningful friendships. Vendored with NLARC, vendor #PL0951 & Lanterman Regional center #PW5530 

Ages: 5-7 and 8-10  Cost: $375 for 8 sessions            

TUESDAYS (starting January 15th)

We Rock The Spectrum

An exciting class at We Rock the Spectrum gym in Glendale will give our kids the chance to strengthen core muscles while building confidence, gross motor and athletic skills. Through small group coaching, kids will experience and enjoy a full-size trampoline, zip line and adult-size swings to fill sensory needs as well as treadmill, stationary bike, rowing machine and more!                  

Ages: 10 and up    Cost: $320 for 8 sessions   (Vans leave Autism Center at 3:30pm and return at 5:45pm)                                                                   

Gaming Club                                                                   

Tech gaming combined with traditional board and mental challenge games providing a perfect balance working with X-box, switch, Pokemon Go, and many more… it’s all about changing it up, making it fun, developing negotiating, compromising and team skills.

Ages: 7-9 & 10 and up           Cost: $225 for 8 sessions

Yoga                                                                   

Increase the positives (balance, strength, fitness and self-awareness) while learning to reduce the negatives (stress and anxiety) through breathing, positioning, and mindfulness techniques in this fun beginner’s class.

Ages: 5-9 & 10 and up           Cost: $235 for 8 sessions

WEDNESDAYS (starting January 16th)

Cooking Club

A fun and important skill building class focused on healthy recipes and culinary skills. Kid chefs will learn, prepare and enjoy various recipes each week ending the session with a party and a recipe book to take home.

Ages: 7-10 & 11 and up    Cost: $235 for 8 sessions      

Basketball                                                                                                                                                                                                             
High-energy sports class focusing on skills development, teamwork and sportsmanship. 

Ages: 5-9 & 10 and up    Cost: $225 for 8 sessions   

Anime

Join the fun and learn more about anime and manga…and even create your own! The potential of young vivid imaginations can be expanded through anime while creating their own original works.                                                                                                       

Ages: 7 and up    Cost: $235 for 8 sessions    

THURSDAYS (starting January 17th)

Fun & Fitness                                                                   

A very popular, fun and energetic class where kids participate in a variety of interactive physical games including dodge ball, Capture the Flag, real life Angry Birds, obstacle courses, scavenger hunts and more. This program encourages positive social interaction, team building, and gross motor skills development.

Ages: 5-9 & 10 and up         Cost: $225 for 8 sessions

Computer Skills                                                                   

Students are introduced at their own pace to Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel and build keyboarding skills in each of these technical areas for future academic and employment success. A class for beginning learning and practice.

Ages: 7-10& 11 and up           Cost: $225 for 8 sessions

The Miracle Project

Ever popular and amazing, we are proud to offer this highly acclaimed, award winning creative arts program that enables children and teens with autism or other special needs to express themselves through music, dance, film, writing, and acting. Social skills and creativity soar while working together to create and perform an original musical production. 

Ages: 7 and up          Cost: $400 for 8 sessions (+ 1-2 extra rehearsal(s)) (Begins January 10!)

FRIDAYS (starting January 18th)

Bowling League

This highly popular class includes round trip transportation, instruction, bowling shoes, game play, tournament and a whole lot of fun with peers at PINZ Bowling Alley.                 

Ages: 7-10 & 11 and up    Cost: $280 for 8 sessions    (Vans leave Autism Center at 3:30pm and return at 5:45pm)    

Introduction to the Stem Experience

An introductory class where students learn how to create new worlds through digital animation, develop skills designed to create and maintain quality websites through coding, as well as build, wire and program your own bot!

Ages: 7 and up    Cost: $275 for 8 sessions   

Dance Fusion

Kids dance with joy in this new class that introduces and builds skills in a number of dance genres such as hip-hop, modern dance and more! Dancers have fun learning techniques, steps and even choreographed group pieces while working on concentration, coordination, strength, flexibility, and overall body conditioning.    

Ages: 7-10 & 11 and up    Cost: $225 for 8 sessions   

 

Staff supervision and snack are provided at no extra charge for Help Group students after school to the start of classes. All classes meet for 8 weekly sessions from 4:00-5-15pm unless otherwise noted.
